Solar Energy Project Funding

Dear Mishkan community,

Did you know that solar energy illuminates our Sanctuary and Chapel Ner Tamids? Would you like to see our entire building powered exclusively by solar energy so that we can live our values by not relying on fossil fuels for any of our energy needs? And do our part to improve Pennsylvania’s ranking of 46th in the U.S. in the percentage of renewable energy use (3.1% in 2022)? Read more here!

If you are able to make a loan and/or donation, please complete the below form. You can make the loan/donation today or pledge the amount to be given in the future. You can make a pledge by putting in the date of anticipated payment rather than paying today. Please contact any of us for more details or with questions.

We believe that solar/renewable energy is well-aligned with Mishkan’s Statement of Principles and our core values. Thank you for your consideration in helping to make Mishkan solar-powered.

All funds raised through this project are to be used solely for expenditures related to the purchase and installation of a new solar energy system at 4101 Freeland Avenue, Philadelphia. Details of the solar project are described in “Mishkan Solar Energy Committee Letter to the Community,” linked above.

Based on our proposed schedule, we would like to have all funding submitted by September 1, 2024, if possible

Terms of the Loan:

Mishkan will pay NO interest (0% or zero percent).
Lender holds NO security interest in Mishkan.
The loan carries the financial risk of The Project failing to repay some or all of its borrowed capital. Any amount and timing of repayment will be the sole discretion of Mishkan.
If there is any discrepancy between the description of The Project and this loan agreement, this loan agreement takes precedence.

Repayment of the Loan:

Mishkan anticipates qualifying for a reimbursement that the government will offer, totaling 40% of its initial investment.  Mishkan expects to apply for the reimbursement by 6/30/25. The reimbursement is expected to be received from the government by 6/30/26. Once the reimbursement is received, it will be used to pay down all loans for The Project on a pro rata basis.
Remaining loan balances will be paid back gradually, with annual repayments made on a pro rata basis. These annual repayments will be based on a forecast of Mishkan’s annual budget

expense for electricity less the actual solar energy expense plus revenue from the sale of Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs). Mishkan anticipates this repayment process taking up to  nine (9) years.
